Rhythm Rocks! An experiential after school percussion class for kids in grades K through 7.
Schools in'09 are: Otis, Alameda; Edison, Alameda and Chabot, Oakland
In a non-threatening and positive environment we explore world rhythms, drum set skills, call and response, drum circle, body percussion, vocal percussion and ensemble skills.
Techniques used include:
-Trades - Based on the jazz tradition of mimicing and expanding upon ideas "played to us" from another group or individual.
- Rhythm Relays - Based on the relay races of track and field in which the object is to not drop the baton. In our case, it's a rhythm and the object is to pass it to the next team member without disrupting the groove. This is a rhythmic strengthening and team building exercise.
- Fruit Rhythms - We use the rhythm inherent in the native language of the students to build rhythmic phrases. Through the exploration of certain fruit words, the kids will learn to compose and perform fairly complex rhythms.
- Traditional Rhythms - We will learn how to perform the the rhythms of other cultures including the Batucada of Brazil and the Bembe of Africa. In the process kids will develop discipline, listening skills, and team skills.
-Electronic Percussion - Through the use of electronic drum pads and sound modules, kids will have the chance to develop 2, 3 and 4-way drum set independence. Focus will be on Rock and Funk beats.
- Improvisation - As rhythmic proficiency increases, all students will have the opportunity to improvise over a group sustained vamp. The members of the group learn about dynamics and support and the soloist learns about overcoming fear, respecting other's ideas and "going for it".
